4.01
GENERAL
The Architectural Office is responsible for the control of the greater part of the Government building programme. Whilst most of the work is designed and supervised by the staff of the Office it is sometimes necessary to engage private architects, engineers and quantity surveyors to assist with the programme of work.
4.02
The maintenance of buildings owned by, or leased to, Government, including the routine management of Government-owned property, is the responsibility of the Maintenance Branch of the Office.
4.03
Since July 1967 this Office has assumed responsibility for the construction and maintenance of the majority of buildings required for the use of the British Armed Forces and their dependants within the territory.
4.04
The Architectural Office staff, which in the year under review numbered 1,516, including 432 minor staff, supplies a fully comprehensive range of skills required for the design and construction of buildings of all types and includes architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, building services engineers and maintenance surveyors, together with subordinate technical staff and outdoor supervisory staff. In addition, the Office has its own clerical and accounting sections.
4.05
All work was carried out on contract, and expenditure on Public Works Building Programme works, excluding furniture and equipment, amounted to $320,178,000 and on Defence Works to a further $31,364,000. Of these sums, $214,576,000 was spent on Public Housing, $130,698,000 on other Government projects undertaken in this Office and $6,268,000 on Government projects undertaken by consultants. The value of work ordered on the Maintenance Contracts amounted to $70,728,000, while $7,358,000 was spent on electricity and the cleaning of Government buildings under the control of this Office.
4.06
The Quantity Surveying and Building Services Branches also advise the Director of Education on drawings, specifications, contract documents, tenders, final accounts, building services installations and maintenance work for grant-in-aid and subsidized schools, and site inspections are made. Work estimated at $28,360,000 was started on 19 new projects and work costing $64,120,000 was completed on 41 schools.
