During the final quarter of the year, a review of the audited accounts of all firms accredited to the P.W.D. List of Approved Contractors was undertaken in connection with the proposed implementation of revised financial criteria governing this List. A total of 204 firms was listed at the beginning of the quarter and the review involved meetings and/or varying amounts of correspondence with 129 of these. In addition, 14 sets of audited accounts of parent companies of accredited contractors were examined and a system of continuous review established.
Supplies
2.43
The Supplies Officer, Public Works Department Headquarters, is responsible for the overall control and supervision of Supplies staff and departmental stores attached to the Public Works Department and, where necessary, gives advice to professional and technical officers as well as Supplies personnel on procurement of stores and storehouse operation procedures.
2.44
During the year under review, the following duties were carried out by the Supplies Office:-
(i) Programmed stores inspections of the 29 P.W.D. allocated stores depots were undertaken.
(ii) Annual departmental stocktaking was conducted at 164 stores locations within the Public Works Department, resulting in 5 discrepancies being found. The surpluses and deficiencies were subsequently adjusted or written off.
(iii) A total of 130 cases of lost or deficient stores valued at $20,692.81 was reported by Offices of the P.W.D. during this financial year and were all written off.
(iv) A total of 182 orders for technical publications valued at $41,507.57 was placed.

EXECUTIVE UNIT - METRICATION
Metrication Officer: J.F. McGUINNIETY, A.R.I.C.S.
The P.W.D. Metrication Executive Unit was created in June 1972, its primary task being to formulate a metric philosophy within the Department. A target programme was compiled envisaging three phases in the approach to metrication, namely, Acquisition of Data & Equipment, Training and Implementation.

The overall programme allowed for a time factor of some three years for an almost complete change-over to metrication. It was conceded that in certain Offices, particularly Crown Lands & Survey Office and Electrical & Mechanical Office, although the period of greatest activity would fall within the three years, the implementation period would
