OPERATIONS DIVISION
11.96
The erection and commissioning of the plant continued. Performance testing on Units Nos. 1 to 4 was completed and that on No. 5 was in progress. The erection of Unit No. 6 was virtually completed.
11.97
The commissioning of the central control room and process computer was at an advanced stage.
11.98
The corrosion monitoring programme was continuing and yielding valuable results. It had been found that the corrosion rate on Unit No. 1 was high, and considerable experimentation and modification was carried out with subsequent units to reduce the problem. These works had proved very successful, and the corrosion rate for Unit 3 onwards was very significantly reduced.
11.99 The need for on-site design work and/or design checking threw a very heavy burden on to the staff engaged on resident engineering duties, and a firm of consultants was engaged for a short period at the end of the year in an endeavour to cope with the backlog of as-constructed drawings.
11.100 The restriction on recruitment in the earlier part of 1975 caused considerable staffing difficulties and made it necessary to curtail the contractual performance tests. However, in view of the satisfactory water position at the end of the wet season, this curtailment proved financially advantageous.
11.101 At the end of the year the total number of staff in the Operations Division stood at 135. Attempts to fill the two vacant shift charge engineer posts locally was unsuccessful, and overseas recruitment was in progress.
STAFF OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER/SPECIAL DUTIES
11.102 The main civil engineering works were completed. Finishing and surfacing works remained to be carried out after the plant contractors have moved off site.
11.103
Numerous claims arising from the construction of the site formation and marine works and the administration building were discussed, evaluated and settled. A few claims relating to the plant foundations and site buildings contracts were in process of negotiation.
11.104 Leakage which had developed in the submarine outfall pipeline was sealed by the contractor's divers, but without complete success. Experiments were in progress to find a more suitable sealing material and method before carrying out further repairs.
