9.114 The Staff Welfare Officer assisted in applications for loans, legal aid assistance, public assistance and low cost housing. Fifteen applications for loans from the Staff Welfare Fund were processed and loans amounting to $8600 were approved. During the year, visits were made to staff in hospital or at home on prolonged sick leaves.
9.115 Traditional Christmas parties were held on both sides of the harbour for members of the Office and the functions proved highly successful.

9.116 Staff of this Office continued to support enthusiastically the two annual sports events organized by the Department. In the 8th P.W.D. Sports Day, the Office won the lawn tennis championship for the third time in succession, first place in the 80 m. (men over 40) race, second place in hockey, ten pin bowling, 400 m race, short put, tug-of-war and ladies' events in 4 x 50 m relay, 60 m and 100 m races and long jump, and third places in badminton, squash and "hop step and jump".
9.117 In the 7th P.W.D. Swimming Gala, Mr. Wong Man-leung won the first place in the men's 50 m freestyle in record-breaking time and was second in the 50 m backstroke.
9.118 The 7-a-side mini-football league for the Stead Challenge Trophy was held as a joint function with the Civil Engineering Office. Six Divisions of the Office took part. The Traffic and Transport Survey Division won the Trophy.
