Bus and Tram Studies

Bus inventory and characteristics studies were continued, forty-eight reports on K.M.B. and C.M.B. routes being published. A study of the main bus termini in the urban areas was also carried out and reported on. A technical report on tram speeds and delays on the tram system was completed and issued. Further field observations were carried out at seven most congested spots along the tram route to study causes of tram delays and possible improvements to the system.

Public Light Bus Operation Survey

A survey was conducted for up-dating public light bus operations in Hong Kong in 1975 to monitor the changes in route operation and fare structure as compared with the two previous surveys carried out in 1972 and 1973.

Parking study

An on-street parking survey of goods and container vehicles in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung was carried out and reported on. A further parking study was conducted in Kwai Chung Area 29A to obtain information on parking levels during different periods of the day and to identify illegal parking by types of vehicles within the study area.

Pedestrian Studies

Pedestrian counts were carried out at 130 locations in the Central District of Hong Kong Island to obtain data for a study to relate pedestrian flows with building floor areas, location of building in relation to Mass Transit Railway stations and other parameters. Investigations of twenty pedestrian problem spots were completed and reported on. A study of traffic and pedestrian movements at the Hung Hom Ferry Concourse was specially carried out before the railway terminus moved to Hung Hom to observe the effect of the new railway terminus on traffic circulation in the locality.

Miscellaneous Studies

Other surveys undertaken included speed studies on Kwai Chung Castle Peak Road, Prince Edward Road and Tai Po Road; a 'before' survey to study the effect on delays and traffic flows caused by the omission of the amber light at six linked signalised intersections in the Lau Wai Road area; traffic surveys at Bride's Pool Road, Silver Strand and Deep Water Bay Road and directional counts at nine major junctions in Kwun Tong in connection with the Mass Transit Railway traffic diversions.

Statistics

The total number of vehicles registered at the end of the year was 187,954, a decrease of 1.7% over the preceding 12 months.
