## CARTOGRAPHY

7.62 This group is responsible for the final presentation of the data supplied by the aforementioned groups. The products of the group are unusually varied in that land registration, town planning and tourist, leisure-type plans and maps form a large part of the requirement in addition to the more usual survey plans and topographic maps produced by Government surveys. Up-to-date techniques and methods are employed resulting in a steady improvement in the utility and aesthetic appearance of our products, the most recent of which can compare quite favourably with any overseas publications.

7.63 The cartographic output relies heavily on the reprographic section within the group which has the capability of producing any photographic or photo-mechanical requirement in map production. In addition this section produces all the 'on demand' copies of Survey Branch output for sale and distribution, that is all copies of survey plans, cadastral plans, T.P.O. extract plans as well as being the general outdoor photographer for the whole of P.W.D.

7.64 Finally the group carries out the official publication, distribution and public sale of all its products. The nerve centre of this is the Sales Section in Murray Building which, with the able assistance of the Government Information Services Publications Centre, is now beginning to realise the potential in public sales of maps, plans and photographs.

7.65 Close liaison was maintained with and assistance given to cartographic staff posted to Town Planning Office and on secondment to the New Territories Administration, New Territories Development Department and Agriculture and Fisheries Department.

## BASIC MAPPING

7.66 Production of the 1:1000 metric series was nearly completed for the Kowloon, New Kowloon and Kwun Tong areas. A total of 103 of the 123 sheet coverage were completed, of which 74 were released for distribution. Production of Hong Kong Island sheets also commenced, but on a lower priority basis.

7.67 There is also a heavy demand for 1:1000 mapping in the active N.T. areas. After much experimentation and discussion it has finally been agreed to adopt the simplest method of all for immediate demands that is direct photo-enlargements of the 1:1200 - to be followed by final, recast metric sheets as and when new metric contouring becomes available from the proposed photogrammetric unit commencing early in 1976.

## Cadastral

7.68 Land registration work especially in Mainland Division was at a lower level of demand than the two previous years and is approaching 30% below the record year of 1972. This has eased the problem of introducing metric 1:1000 scale plans for all Kowloon transactions and has enabled the speedy transformation of nearly 70% of the Kowloon record sheets from 1:1200 to 1:1000.

The new record sheets are designed to a completely new specification and produced by new methods which, it is hoped, will obviate most of the redrawing required in the past.
