instruments for plotting maps from aerial photographs, precise horizontal and vertical control must still originate from a land surveyor's observations on the ground; similarly, for important engineering projects such as the Mass Transit system, precise horizontal and vertical control is an essential pre-requisite.
7.42
With some increase of staff in the Control sections, the production of control work in the urban areas of Hong Kong and Kowloon has been brought up to a reasonable level this year and, at the same time, more effort has been placed on the establishment of both additional horizontal and vertical points in the New Territories, in preparation for work to be carried out as part of the N.T. development programme.
7.43
Continued effort has been made to supply the necessary air photo-control for the metric mapping of the areas of the N.T. scheduled for development by the N.T.D.D. The record number of air photo-control points set last year was again broken this year.
Local Air Survey
7.44
Air photography by RC 10 from the R.H.K.A.A.F. 'Islander' continued during the year providing cover of many areas of development, including civil engineering sites, highway alignments, quarry sites and areas of proposed development in the New Territories. This vertical photography has also been used as a means of revising existing survey sheets in the N.T. areas using a locally devised method of plotting from enlarged photographs controlled by surveying recognisable features. A total of 2,100 (225 mm. x 225 mm.) frames of photography for plotting purposes was produced during this period.
7.45 The photogrammetric plotting contracts awarded to the two contractors, namely Messrs. B.K.S. Surveys in Northern Ireland and Associated Surveys Proprietary Ltd. in Perth, Western Australia, are due to expire in July 1975. Messrs. B.K.S. Surveys applied for a 6 months extension as provided for in the contract and this was agreed to in principle, subject to agreement of terms. To date, the work produced by both contractors has in general been at a satisfactory rate and of high standard. A great deal of mapping was accomplished including 1:500 mapping with 1 metre contours of virtually all areas included in Sha Tin New Town and the Tsuen Wan/Kwai Chung/Tsing Yi complex as well as a good proportion of Tuen Mun New Town. In addition many mapping tasks at various scales were carried out for roads, quarries and other engineering development projects.
MAPPING SURVEYS
7.46
Surveys for mapping purposes are carried out at many scales and the resulting maps and plans are used as the basis for all development within Hong Kong.
7.47
Maps produced from surveys effected in the Office range from the detailed large scale topographical sheets used by the engineer and architect in civil engineering and building projects, to the small scale sheets used for overall planning of large areas of development
7.48
In addition, specialised topographical maps and guide maps are produced for the use of the tourist and for recreational purposes within
