The Division is responsible for the planning, design and construction of capital works on behalf of the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway.

Kowloon-Canton Railway Hung Hom Development

6.60

The new terminus is designed to handle 13,000 passengers per hour and 5,090 tonnes of goods a day for transhipment from rail into lorries for the mainland and into junks for Hong Kong Island.

Provision has also been made for handling containers in the future.

6.61 A podium covering 5.3 hectares was under construction above the railway yard. On this podium will be located passenger booking offices, circulating area, waiting rooms, and other appurtenances of railway termini as well as railway and other Government offices, a multi-storey car park, a bus station and an indoor stadium. The first part of the podium (2.4 hectares) together with foundations for the second part supporting an indoor stadium were completed during the year. Work on the second half of the podium progressed satisfactorily and was nearing completion.

Construction of ancillary buildings for the railway terminus was completed with the exception of the carriage washing shed.

Tracklaying was in progress and one goods siding was opened to traffic in August 1974 and is now in use for the transhipment of oil from railway pontoons into floating craft. Road works and drainage progressed satisfactorily but signalling work was delayed by a docks strike at Tilbury, the effects of which were felt long after the settlement of the strike.
