There are six sand-selling depots in the territory: North Point on Hong Kong Island, Cheung Sha Wan and Kwun Tong in Kowloon, and Sha Tin, Tai Lam Chung, and Silver Mine Bay in the New Territories. The depots were open every day throughout the year except major holidays.

Access to the sand depot at Sha Tin was maintained throughout reclamation work for Sha Tin Racecourse. Reclamation for reprovisioning the Tai Lam Chung sand depot was commenced to facilitate new development. Similar work for the Cheung Sha Wan depot, however, was deferred.

There were still unfilled vacancies in the professional and technical staff grades throughout the year despite regular recruitment up to December 1974. Since January 1975, however, recruitment was slowed because of the need for economy.

Sixteen Engineers from overseas and one local Engineer were recruited. Two Assistant Engineers were promoted to full professional grade.

A total of sixteen officers, including eleven with over 20 years of service each, retired during the year. In addition, one officer with over 20 years of service was invalided from the service, and one officer died during the year.

The Chief Engineer, Port Works, attended the International Conference on Coastal Engineering in the U.K. during his vacation leave in June 1974.
6.91 One Chief Engineer from the Drainage Works Division attended a Regional Seminar on Environmental Pollution (Water Pollution) sponsored by the World Health Organisation, held in Manila in March 1975.
6.92 One Senior Engineer from the Drainage Works Division returned from a 1-year post-graduate course in Public Health Engineering at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, in October 1974. During his stay in the U.K., he attended the International Symposium on Discharge of Sewage from Sea Outfalls in August/September 1974.

One Engineer from the Drainage Works Division began a 12-month M.Sc. Course in Environmental Pollution Control at the University of Leeds in October 1974. Another Engineer from the Laboratory Section was awarded a Merit Trip by the Government Training Division. The Merit Trip was for a period of three months commencing in July 1974, during which time the officer visited various laboratory establishments in the United Kingdom.
