11.25

The Division is responsible for the design, preparation of contracts, supervision of construction and commissioning on completion of all new water supply projects other than schemes carried out by consulting engineers and certain minor works carried out by Distribution Division.

11.26

The heavy commitment of the Division on works associated with the High Island project, reported last year, continued throughout the current year. The expenditure this year was $75,800,000 excluding the civil works for the desalting project.

11.27 During the year, the driving of the Second Lion Rock Tunnel and the High Island Western Tunnel system were completed.

11.28

Shortage of staff, particularly in the latter part of the year presented considerable difficulties in meeting the Division's present and foreseeable workload.

11.29 Appendix BB gives details of works under construction and works completed during the year.

Hong Kong Island

11.30 Works to improve fresh water supply to Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan areas were completed and for the improvement of salt water supply to Chai Wan continued. Design work was in hand for additional fresh water supply works for the Pokfulam area and extending the Central District salt water supply.

Kowloon and New Territories

11.31

Construction works for the extension of fresh water and salt water supplies to the New Kowloon East high level areas continued to schedule.

11.32

Construction of a new service reservoir and laying of additional mains to improve supplies to Sheung Shui area were commenced.

11.33

Work on tunnels and intakes associated with the High Island Water Scheme, including the laying of twin 60 inch diameter mains through the second Lion Rock tunnel, neared completion. Tenders were invited for the construction of a lowland pumping station at Wu Lei Tau and orders placed for the supply of an 18 inch diameter pumping main. Design work for a twenty-one million gallons service reservoir near Lion Rock was well advanced.
