Forty-five members of the staff retired during the year, 21 of whom had served for more than 20 years in Government. A further 274 vacancies were caused by death, resignation and transfers.
Training
8.56 A total of 565 professional and technical officers attended courses conducted locally by the Government Training Division, the Labour Department and other educational or institutional centres. One local officer was selected for a Merit Trip.

In addition, 6 graduates from the engineering faculties of the University of Hong Kong spent 3 months summer vacation in the Workshops undergoing practical training. Ten Polytechnic students underwent similar training and 32 staff attended first aid training courses.
Sports and Recreation
8.58
The Office Staff Club arranged a full programme of social and sporting activities during the year which were well supported by members. The Club now has a membership of 1,850 and publishes its own monthly magazine the 'Newsletter' - in Chinese.

Many staff took an active interest in Departmental Sporting activities, and the Office had another successful year in athletics and other sports.
Welfare and Staff Relations
Visits
8.60 The Staff Welfare Officer assisted in 34 applications for Government Low Cost Housing. Loans from the Staff Welfare Funds in respect of 19 applicants were processed and loans amounting to $19,700 were approved. Visits were made to staff in hospitals during the year, assistance was given to members on a variety of welfare matters and advice given to minor staff on the organisation and function of the Office.

The three Credit Unions, set up in 1970, continued to prosper and now have a combined membership of 1,029. Savings amounting to $279,530 have been recorded to date.
8.62
The purchase of rice and other commodities by the staff welfare officer continued throughout the year. This was conducted on a non-profit-making basis and a total of 11,600 piculs of rice and 15,030 catties of peanut oil were sold to the members of the staff.

The Joint Staff Discussion Groups met at regular intervals and dealt with many matters of interest to both parties.
