The Electrical and Mechanical Services Section maintains all the electrical, mechanical and air conditioning installations at the Hong Kong City Hall, carrying out the repairs of faults, replacement of lamps of all types, installation of temporary wiring for flood and display lighting and operates the 735 TR air conditioning plant. 8.44 The Electrical and Mechanical Services Section operates and maintains all electrical and mechanical systems and electronic equipment connected with toll booths and recorders, carbon monoxide monitoring equipment, visibility indication and alarm equipment, height detection equipment, emergency communication equipment, fire extinguisher alarm equipment, traffic and signal control equipment, tunnel lighting, ventilation plant and 'no-break' generating sets as well as lane marker beacons at both ends of the toll plaza. Routine maintenance and general overhaul of plant and equipment continued throughout the year.

The Design and Projects Division commenced an investigation into the up-grading of lighting within the tunnel.

8.45 The Hospital Services Section is responsible for the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment located in Government Hospitals and Clinics and also in the British Military Hospital. This plant includes steam boilers, calorifiers, autoclaves and sterilizers, steam heating, kitchen and laundry equipment, emergency generators, hydrotherapy pools, air conditioning plant and general lighting. In addition the Hung Hom Pumping Plant for the supply of sea water to the Queen Elizabeth and British Military Hospitals services and the steam boiler and laundry equipment in the Medical Department Central Laundry at Shau Kei Wan are operated and maintained.

A nominal maintenance team was established in the new Princess Margaret Hospital during the year for the purpose of commissioning the plant and the implementation of maintenance schedules.

MILITARY WORKS SUB-DIVISION

(including the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force)

8.47 This Sub-Division is controlled by a serving officer of the Royal Engineers stationed at the Head Office, the remainder of the staff being deployed in the three Military Works Electrical and Mechanical Depots. Depots are situated in the main military complexes with one responsible for Hong Kong Island, one for Kowloon and one for the New Territories. Each Depot is supervised by a Warrant Officer or Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Royal Engineers on secondment. The staff of each Depot numbers about 90 and they have a small workshop with minor repair and test facilities to assist them in their work.
