8.55 The Office Staff Club arranged a full programme of social and sporting activities during the year which were well supported by members. The Club now has a membership of nearly 1,400 and publishes its own monthly magazine, the "Newsletter" - in Chinese.
8.56 The staff took an active interest in departmental sporting activities, and had another very successful year in both athletics and other sports.
Welfare and Staff Relations
8.57 The Staff Welfare Officer assisted in 73 applications for Government Low Cost Housing. Loans from the Staff Welfare Fund were processed and loans amounting to $18,700 were approved. Visits were made to staff admitted to hospitals during the year, assistance was given to the wives of deceased officers in respect of Letters of Administration and advice given to minor staff on their problems.
8.58 The three Credit Unions, set up in 1970, now have a membership of 938. Savings of over $170,000 have been recorded to date.
8.59 Early in 1974 the Staff Welfare Officer arranged for the purchase of rice direct from the importer for re-sale to staff. This was conducted on a non-profitable basis resulting in prices being 8% - 10% cheaper.
8.60 The Joint Staff Discussion Groups met at regular intervals and dealt with many matters of interest to both parties.
