There are six sand-selling depots, at North Point on Hong Kong Island, at Cheung Sha Wan and Kwun Tong in Kowloon, and at Sha Tin, Tai Lam Chung, and Silver Mine Bay in the New Territories. These depots were open for business on 354 days during the year. In addition to the selling depots, there is a sand storage site at Kennedy Town on Hong Kong Island. Substantial repair works to the sand storage bays were carried out at North Point sand depot.

Reclamation for the Sha Tin Racecourse seawards of the Sha Tin sand depot commenced, but marine access was maintained according to plan. Reprovisioning of the Cheung Sha Wan and Tai Lam Chung sand depots awaited the development of further works to be carried out seawards of these existing depots.

Testing of construction materials for the Public Works and other Government departments and for the public is carried out at the main P.W.D. Laboratory at North Point and at the branch laboratory at Farm Road, Kowloon. The two quarry laboratories at Mt. Butler and Diamond Hill test the materials produced at these quarries.

The total number of tests carried out by the laboratories during the year was 88,649, an increase of 13% over last year. Of the tests, 9,994 were for private firms. More soil tests than previously were carried out during the year.

Various new items of testing equipment were purchased for the North Point and Farm Road Laboratories.

A new railway terminus was under construction at Hung Hom. On completion, this terminus will replace the existing terminal station at Tsim Sha Tsui and the railway goods yard at Blackhead, thus releasing valuable land for other development.
