Consulting engineers continued to play an important part in the implementation of civil engineering projects. Because of the specialised nature of some of the projects, it has been necessary to engage consulting engineers to assist in their implementation, and their involvement is likely to increase in the foreseeable future especially in environmental pollution control projects.

6.07 Eight firms of consulting engineers were engaged on 23 projects. Eleven of the projects were investigations or feasibility studies and reports on eight of these were received.

6.08

Construction work commencing during the year included the main culvert in Kwai Chung Reclamation and the temporary airport fire station. Work on the extension of the airport runway by 2,780 feet, to a total length of 11,130 feet, was well advanced. Tenders were invited for the grooving of the new runway.
