DESIGN AND PROJECTS DIVISION

Chief Electrical and Mechanical Engineer:

This Division is responsible for all new projects, both Electrical and Mechanical, which are undertaken on behalf of client Departments and the various Offices of the Public Works Department. In addition to acting as consultants, the duties of the Division include the investigation, design, preparation of specifications, drawings, indents and contract documents for,

New Projects Completed

8.06 During the year some 37 projects were completed at an estimated total cost of $6.07 million. These included the installation of fuel oil systems, emergency generators, subway lighting, vehicle servicing equipment, refuse incinerators, water pumps, steam, water and compressed air services, public lighting for piers, oil burning equipment, cattle weighbridges, sewage screening plant, laundry equipment and high-voltage equipment for Hong Kong International Airport.

Design

8.07 Preliminary investigation, design work, preparation of specifications and detail drawings for 45 projects were completed while similar work on 31 other projects was in hand at the end of the year.

Projects under Construction

8.08 At the end of the year work was in progress under contract and by direct labour on 55 projects valued at over $59 million.

Lifts and Escalators

8.09 There are now 9,456 lifts and 191 escalators in use in the Colony. A total of 11,079 certificates in respect of examinations and tests of safety equipment was issued and 29 investigations made into lift accidents, unregistered lifts and complaints by the public.
