6.61. Routine monitoring of the pollution level in various parts of the Hong Kong waters and measuring the sewage flow in sewers continued with a view to assessing the performance of sewage screening plants, outfalls and the adequacy of the existing sewerage systems.
6.62. Investigation on the possible effects of nightsoil dumping in West Lamma Channel was being conducted.

6.63. The Quarries Section functions as a separate unit directly responsible to the Principal Government Civil Engineer for the operation of the two government quarries, the administration of contract quarries, advice on quarrying matters generally, and the operation of the laboratories providing a material-testing service to Government and the public. On 1st July, 1970, the Section took over from Government Supplies Department the responsibility for the collection and sale of natural sand. Details of revenue earned by the Quarries Section are given in Appendix S.

The Government quarries at Diamond Hill in Kowloon and Mount Butler on Hong Kong Island are operated by directly-employed labour to produce asphalt and bitumen macadam for road works and aggregate for making concrete. Measures taken to encourage the use of Government-produced aggregates coupled with the effects of a general growth in demand and a shortage from other sources of supply led
