# Military Works and Services
2.33. The Defence Costs Agreement which expired on 31st March, 1971 required the Department to undertake all maintenance works and services in military establishments throughout the Colony as well as the design and construction of new capital projects for the three Services.
2.34. The gross expenditure in respect of maintenance and new services minor works totalled $14.136M, of which $8.522M was reimbursed by the United Kingdom Government in accordance with the terms of the Agreement.
2.35. With regard to capital works, the Agreement provided that over the period April 1967 to 31st March, 1971 the Hong Kong Government would contribute £2.4M or $36.014M in respect of new buildings for the Army. The balance of funds available from this contribution to cover new capital works during 1970-71 was limited, and as shown in Appendix J, a total of $4.583M was spent on this account. In addition, however, the United Kingdom Government authorized further capital projects outside the scope of the Hong Kong Government commitment and the value of such works undertaken during 1970-71 totalled $12.903M, the full amount being reimbursed by the United Kingdom Government.
2.36. The following comparative statement summarizes expenditure accounted for in respect of military works and services undertaken during the currency of the four-year Agreement.
