The department continues to be faced with the need for a large number of staff in the Electrical and Mechanical Office and the Waterworks Office to work continuous overtime. 69,720 overtime claims were processed during the year, covering an accumulative total of 2,109,288 overtime hours work which is equivalent to 263,661 additional man days. The amount of overtime worked is again higher than in the previous year.

2.19. The department's expenditure on general overheads as accounted for under Other Charges rose from $4,269,534 in 1969-70 to $4,525,920 in 1970-71, an increase of approximately 5%.
2.20. A large number of officers continue to use their own car to carry out their official duties and claim the appropriate mileage allowance. A total of 9,108 claims were processed in 1970-71 involving an expenditure of $120,689. This is the cheapest form of transport to Government.

This increase of $5.026M or 28% is principally attributable to the substantial increases in maintenance contract rates which occurred over the year.
