9.46. Two Government multi-storey car parks were completed and opened to the public, the Rumsey Street Car Park on the Island, comprising 905 parking spaces in June 1970 and the Yau Ma Tei Car Park in Kowloon comprising 414 parking spaces in November 1970.
9.47. Three multi-storey car parks undertaken by private developers were under construction, one on the Island with a capacity for 800 parking spaces and two in Kowloon with capacities of 1,000 and 400 spaces respectively.
9.48. The installation of parking meters continued. There was a nett increase of 145 metered spaces on the Island and 393 spaces in Kowloon.
9.49. As a result of development progressing on the Central Reclamation, 334 designated parking spaces and 328 Government open-air temporary parking spaces in the Central Business District on Hong Kong Island were cancelled. An appraisal of the parking situation in the Central business district in the next 5 years was carried out to assist future planning, taking into account the demand expected to be generated by the opening of the Cross Harbour Tunnel. As a result, high priority was given to the construction of a multi-storey car park at Murray Road with 900 spaces and a temporary off-street car park at the Ex-Naval Dockyard with 540 spaces.
9.50. In order to cope with the increase of commercial vehicles, there was a nett increase of 53 designated parking spaces for goods vehicles on the Island, 183 spaces in Kowloon and 92 spaces in the New Territories.
9.51. The provision of designated parking spaces for motor cycles has been increased by the addition of 260 spaces on the Island, 152 spaces in Kowloon and 63 spaces in the New Territories.
Traffic Light Signals
9.52. A total of 14 additional sets of traffic light signals were installed at road intersections and pedestrian crossing places on the Island. The total number of sets now in operation on Hong Kong Island is 79.
