9.06. The three highways divisions, regionally located on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and in the New Territories, are responsible for the maintenance of the road network and associated drainage systems in the colony and with the exception of projects entrusted to consulting engineers undertake the design and supervision of the majority of new road construction works in the Public Works Programme. The total number of projects in hand numbered 42, with an aggregate value of $86M. Details and progress on some of these projects are described in paragraph 9.25 to paragraph 9.38.

Maintenance

9.07. With the ever increasing volume of vehicular traffic, a major effort of the divisions has been directed at the maintenance and improvements of the highway system. Altogether 24.8 miles of roads were resurfaced and 6.9 miles reconstructed. A large number of the older roads requiring reconstruction in order to bring them up to standards comparable to the densities of the daily traffic were in Kowloon. In the New Territories, 19 bus bays were constructed along the major routes and several footpaths provided in the vicinity of town-
