by 11,736, representing an increase of 11.4% compared to a 7.3% increase for the previous year.
5.94. The growth in population, road mileage, injury accidents and vehicle registrations over the past decade is illustrated by the graph on page 59. Generally the trends follow those of preceding years although there was an encouraging fall in the number of personal-injury accidents compared with the previous year.
Traffic Aids
5.95. The installation and maintenance of various traffic aids continued during the year. Two new contracts for the supply of traffic signs and one for sign supports were entered into with local manufacturers, each covering a one-year period. To guide motorists using the existing road network in the New Territories, 35 directional signs were designed and installed at major road junctions. A large number of directional signs were also installed in the urban areas in connection with the implementation of an interim routing scheme for the Garden Road complex, the opening of the Lai Chi Kok Bridge and the partial closure of Princess Margaret Road for the construction of the Chatham Road flyover. Approximately 10,000 gallons of paint were used on carriageway markings which served to guide both motorists and pedestrians on the roads throughout the Colony.
5.96. Associated with the construction of pedestrian crossings, traffic islands and other road improvements, 347 illuminated traffic aids were installed while another 280 were removed for various reasons.
5.97. Work started on the implementation of a programme for the installation of a total of 1,693 parking meters of various types both in Hong Kong and in Kowloon. Progress was maintained in the marking out of free on-street parking spaces, which increased by 1,000.
Traffic Light Signals
5.98. Substantial progress was maintained on the provision of traffic light signals at busy intersections and crossing places. 45 additional sets of signals were brought into operation, bringing the Colony total to 163. The design for a further 47 installations was completed and arrangements for ordering the necessary equipment, including 'wig-wag' signals for fire stations and level crossings, were in hand.
