318. A total of 269,099 feet of piping varying from 2" - 24" diameter was laid, the more important works being as follows:
Hong Kong Island:
(1) Tai Hang Road-Pumping main from Eastern Filters to Tai Hang Service Reservoir. 5,000 feet 5" main replaced by 8" cast iron, (2) Lockhart Road, Arsenal Street to Fleming Road-1,000 feet 8" cast iron main and 1,000 feet 12" laid in replacement of 6". (3) Des Voeux Road Central, Jubilee Street to On Tai Street-600 feet 10", 700 feet 8" and 650 feet 6" cast iron mains laid to replace undersized pipes.
(4) Ice House Street-350 feet 18" outlet main from service reservoir in Botanical Gardens-laid in conjunction with road reconstruction. (5) Outlet from 750 feet Service Reservoir-1,000 feet 12" cast iron main laid to Po Shan Road to replace 10".
(6) Chai Wan Resettlement Estate-12", 10" and 6" cast iron mains laid as required.
Mainland and New Territories:
(1) Salisbury Road-Middle Road Canton Road-1,300 feet 12" cast iron main replaced by 18".
(2) Kowloon Tsai Service Reservoir--Outlet main relaid. 200 feet 24" steel main and 500 feet 18" cast iron main.
(3) Nathan Road-1,600 feet 24" steel main relaid at adequate depth. (4) Resettlement Estates-10,000 feet 4" - 18" asbestos cement mains to complete salt water flushing distribution.
(5) Yuen Long Supply—Approximately 24 miles 15" asbestos cement main from Tai Lam Chung Reservoir.
(6) Tsuen Wan Industrial Zone I—3,000 feet 6" - 12" cast iron main. (7) Tai Po Kau-Tai Po Market-3,000 feet 8" cast iron main.
Service Reservoirs
319. All service reservoirs were cleaned and inspected and no major repairs were found necessary. Inlet and outlet valves were tested and overhauled as required. New service reservoirs at Lai Chi Kok and Ngau Tau Kok were put into commission.
Catchwaters
320. Considerable damage and blockages occurred in many catchwaters as a result of heavy summer rains.
321. Improvements to lessen the risk of future damage were made, especially to the Beacon Hill and Jubilee Catchwaters. Breaches in the Wong Nei Chong Catchwater and Pok Fu Lam Conduit were repaired and the flood relief gates to the Tai Tam Tuk Catchwater which suffered damage were repaired. Normal maintenance and routine clearance of silt from the catchwaters was carried out.
