254. Ten miles of new roads were built mainly in concrete and 39 miles resurfaced with premix bituminous carpets. In the reconstruction of an additional 13 miles of existing roads heavy specifications were adopted to meet the demands of ever increasing traffic. Wider footpaths with safety devices such as guard rails and pedestrian crossings and refuges were also provided in these roads wherever opportune and necessary.

258. A number of these roads, notably Des Voeux Road, Central and West, Glenealy, part of Lockhart Road, Tregunter Path and Wyndham Street were reconstructed in concrete for greater durability and were improved where possible in drainage, alignment and super-elevation. Ice House Street and Broadwood Road which were rebuilt in concrete were widened in parts.
259. Certain other roads liable to alterations in alignment and width were constructed with an asphalt wearing surface on a bituminous macadam base.
260. In the course of road reconstruction advantage was taken wherever practicable to widen footpaths and provide new paths where these did not exist.
261. 26 bus bays were built at various places in concrete to obviate damage to bituminous surfaces by diesel and oil drippings. Three of these were put down in Leighton Road, Stubbs Road and near Ricci Hall in Pok Fu Lam Road. Five bus and ten tram shelters were erected in Des Voeux Road as part of the reconstruction scheme.
