113. On 1st January, 1960 the revised provisions of the 1960 reprint of the Buildings Ordinance 1955 and the regulations made thereunder came into operation. In addition, a Code of Practice has been published on the provision of means of escape in case of fire and allied requirements.
Domestic Buildings
114. The demand for accommodation of all types continued unabated. Stimulated by the increase in tourism no less than five new hotel buildings are now under construction in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Kowloon which, when completed, will furnish a total of 1,064 rooms and 80 suites. There have been proposals submitted for further hotels on both sides of the harbour.
Non-domestic Buildings
115. The changing face of the Central District of Victoria remarked upon in the report for 1958/59 is now much more apparent in that Shell House, Central Building and Union House are nearing completion, the new Chartered Bank Building and Tak Shing House are finished and occupied, and redevelopment of the Queen's Theatre site is well under way. In Kowloon too the same trend is evident in the many multi-storeyed composite buildings in Tsim Sha Tsui. In this area no less than 7 such buildings were either completed or are under construction and will provide in addition to shops, offices, restaurants, etc., more than 2,000 domestic flats on the upper floors. Industrial development has been concentrated mainly in the Kwun Tong, Hung Hom and Cheung Sha Wan areas of Kowloon and the trend in factory buildings is now also towards multi-storey projects.
Dangerous Buildings
116. 40 Closure Orders were obtained in respect of buildings which had become dangerous by fire, dilapidation, or other causes; and some 407 notices to repair were issued.
117. The exceptionally heavy rainstorms in June made it necessary for a 24-hour shift system to be organized to deal with resulting landslides and collapses. Between 13th & 18th June the office received some 99 emergency calls. By prompt action and close co-operation with
