The settlement has been extended to areas which cannot be fed by gravity. The necessary pumps were ordered and the construction of pump houses, service tanks and the laying of the mains commenced, to provide a supply to the higher levels.
(b) Mt. Davis-Area G. Supply was extended to the huts situated on the higher levels.
(c) Chuk Yuen. This is a new settlement almost half of which cannot be fed by gravity. Orders were placed for the necessary pumps. The construction of pump houses and service tanks was commenced and approx. 5,000 ft. of supply mains were laid.
(d) Shek Kip Mei. In connexion with the rehousing of the fire victims, a scheme to provide a water supply through standpipes was commenced. By the end of the year approx. 2,000 ft. of 6″ and 1,500 ft. of 3″ pipes had been laid and 17 standpipes installed.
The flushing supply is from a stream in the vicinity and 4,000 ft. of 4″ dia. pipe were laid between the stream and the communal latrines.
351. Boring. The boring gangs were kept fully employed on work in connexion with the Tai Lam Chung Scheme. Bore holes were also sunk for:
(a) The Architectural Office at Leighton Hill.
(b) Port Works Office in connexion with the new Star Ferry Pier at Tsim Sha Tsui.
(c) Messrs. Scott, Wilson, Kirkpatrick & Partners, in connexion with the development of Kai Tak Airport.
The two existing diamond core drills which were obtained in 1946 from war surplus stock have been fully employed since they were purchased, and they are approaching the end of their useful life. An order was placed for one new rig.
