path 5′0′′ wide was built on the landward side. Lai Chi Kok Beach, to which this road runs, attracts a considerable number of people during the Summer and Autumn, many of whom can now be carried by augmented bus services right to the beach. To accommodate these buses and to make it possible for them to turn round, a new Terminus was constructed as part of the contract for the roadworks. Three loading bays with accommodation for 14 buses were constructed together with two broad flights of steps leading down to the beach and the amusement park.
261. The reconstruction of a part of Ma Tau Wei Road was one of the major schemes undertaken in Kowloon during the year.
It was originally 100'0" wide, but when Chatham Road became the main through road from Kowloon City to Tsim Sha Tsui, the width of that section south of Chatham Road was reduced to 75'0" in the Town Planning layout. The wide junction formed by the intersection of three 100'0" roads, Ma Tau Wei Road, Chatham Road and To Kwa Wan Road, had been the scene of many accidents, and traffic islands were constructed to divert traffic into definite streams of flow. The old road surface was in a very poor condition and consisted of waterbound or bituminous macadam of varying thicknesses laid partly on rubble foundations and partly without any foundation. It was replaced by 8" of vibrated cement concrete under a wearing coat of 1" thickness of bituminous macadam, and the footways were formed of 21/2" of granolithic pavement with granite kerbs.
262. The traffic islands were built of rubble masonry walls 18" high and filled with earth with a view to planting flowering shrubs and grass on them to give a pleasing appearance.
263. In addition to the major schemes already described, other reconstruction work completed in the City included the remaining section of Blue Pool Road from Broom Road for a distance of approximately 600 yards, Albany Road, Hawthorn Road, part of Glenealy leading from Robinson Road to Conduit Road, Sing Woo Road in conjunction with the decking of the nullah in the centre of the road, and parts of Queen Victoria Street, Cadogan Street, Jubilee Street and Centre Street.
