Wanchai using both berths. If, in the future, an additional ferry service is operated between Ma Tau Kok and North Point, the internal layout can easily be altered so that each ferry service has its own berth and traffic handling facilities.
238. Electrically operated ramps and lifts which can be raised or lowered to suit tidal conditions and thus facilitate the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers will be installed, and an area of about 6 acres will be reclaimed to provide a suitable concourse for vehicles.
239. The new Star Ferry Piers, designs for which were nearly complete by the end of the year, will be 'U'-shaped, and thus each pier will provide four berths. At the Kowloon Terminal the new pier will be built over the area at present occupied by the Kowloon Public Pier and the existing Star Ferry Pier, and consequently, the work will have to be carried out as follows:-
(a) Construction of a new Kowloon Public Pier between the existing ferry pier and the K.C.R. pier. This will have to be built in two halves, the second half being built after the submarine telephone and signal cables which exist at this point are diverted.
(b) Demolition of the existing public pier.
(c) Construction of one arm of the new ferry pier on the site of the existing public pier. The ferry service can then be diverted to this new construction.
(d) Demolition of the existing ferry pier.
(e) Completion of the second arm of the new ferry pier.
(f) Diversion of the submarine cables and completion of the new public pier.
Investigations and designs for the new public pier were completed by the end of the year.
