201. The maintenance, repair and overhaul of all Government electrical and mechanical equipment, including motor vehicles, engineering plant, lifts, motors, printing machines, boiler installations, air conditioning plants, refrigerators and domestic appliances, was carried out during the year, and many items of new plant were installed.

Mechanical Section

202. This section was mainly employed on the maintenance of Government's fleet of motor vehicles, which, at the end of the year, totalled 834, comprising 238 cars and light general purpose vans, 464 lorries and special purpose vehicles and 132 motor cycles. A considerable number of the lorries which were obtained from various sources in 1946, and particularly the ex-Army vehicles, were nearing the end of their useful life.

203. Four new diesel road rollers were received and put into service to replace the old steam rollers, and Government now operates 24 motor rollers all of postwar make.

204. 55 KW emergency diesel generating sets were installed in the Ruttonjee Sanatorium and at the Yaumati Slipway; one 40 KW set was installed in Kowloon Hospital and an additional two 15 KW, ten 6 KW, and sixteen 3 KW generating sets were received and installed in various locations.
