247. Tenders for the supply of an electrically driven centrifugal pump to replace the present standby steam driven ram pumps were received.
248. Standby Pump, Albany. The diesel driven unit for Albany Pumping Station was received and installed. It proved satisfactory under test.
249. Tytam Tuk-Shaukiwan Supply. The first stage of this scheme, which was to provide an unfiltered supply to the R.A.F. station at Sai Wan and to the Resettlement areas nearby, was completed. Quotations were invited for the supply of a 2 million gallons per day rapid gravity filtration plant. Preliminary investigation and survey work were completed for the erection of the filter house and the construction of a 3 million gallons service reservoir.
250. Salt Water Fire Fighting Scheme. Three new pump houses were erected on the waterfront along Connaught Road between Blake Pier and Eastern Street. A further 17,270 ft. of 6" asbestos cement and 6,850 ft. of cast iron pipes were laid. The 3 diesel driven pumping units were installed and tested. Only two of them, however, proved satisfactory as the end casing of the third pump fractured under test. Examination showed that the material in the casing was not up to standard and the matter was accordingly taken up with the manufacturers. The salt water fire fighting scheme could, however, be operated using the other two pumps.
251. Kowloon R.G. Filters. An order was placed for a 7 million gallons per day rapid gravity filtration plant. A survey was made of the proposed site for the filter house and its design was almost completed.
252. Shamshuipo Balance Tank. Repairs to this tank were completed early in the year at a total cost of $240,000.
253. Deep Well Boring, New Territories. The drilling rig ordered the previous year had not arrived by the end of the year and in consequence no work was possible.
