below formation; the soft clay pockets below this depth being removed and packed solid with rubble. The subgrade was rolled with a 12-ton roller and hand packed rubble, hammer-wedged, was laid in three 9" courses, each course being rolled and blinded with second grade aggregate. An 8″ vibrated concrete slab and a 1" bituminous carpet were laid on this foundation. Work was carried out in two shifts from 6.00 a.m. to 12 midnight and 15,300 sq. yds. of runway were reconstructed in three months.
192. Castle Peak Road between Un Long and Au Tau, a distance of one mile, was one of the most dangerous sections of the New Territories circular road. This was due to the presence of a number of schools along the road and the attraction of the busy town of Un Long for the surrounding villagers. The 20'-0" wide roadway excessively cambered was totally inadequate for the pedestrian and vehicular traffic and the opportunity was taken during the year to widen this roadway to 36'-0" overall by means of dumped material from adjoining road cuttings. This filled material was not given a metalled surface but has provided a footpath on each side of the existing road and considerably relieved the congestion.
193. A total of 22 passing places, bus stops and car parks was constructed along the length of the Lam Tsuen Valley Road to enable it to be opened as a public road and bus route.
Reconstruction of Ma Niu Shui Bridge.
194. This scheme whereby the old reinforced concrete bridge of beam and slab construction was replaced by an R.C.C. box culvert 125'-0" in length 11'-0" high 13'-0" wide inside was completed on 7th January, some eleven months after the contract was signed. The improvement effected to the approaches for a distance of 1,000 ft. on either side of the culvert by the provision of a superelevated 22′-0″ carriageway and two 5′-0″ footways has completely changed the character of this section of road. Where previously it proved a bottleneck to be negotiated with extreme caution, it can now be considered as one of the finest sections of roadway in the rural area of the Colony.
