183. The vehicular ferry terminal at Jordan Road, Kowloon was replanned and reconstructed in a similar manner to the Hong Kong concourse. Provision was made for loading and off-loading bays to accommodate five lanes of buses at any one time, parking facilities for taxis, private cars, and rickshaws whilst the erection of pedestrian handrailing at the edge of the footpaths proved of great assistance in the control of the large crowds using the ferries at the peak periods.

Other Reconstruction.

184. The reconstruction of Island Road through the rapidly developing fishing and industrial district of Aberdeen was continued from the entrance to the Whampoa Dock Co.'s property as far as the new wholesale Fish Market, a distance of a mile. The roadway was widened from 30'-0" to 46'-0" overall, which gave a 30'-0" width of carriageway, but provision was made for its eventual construction as a 60'-0" wide road.

185. In the New Territories, the road leading from Sek Kong to Sheung Shui, originally a military road known as Route II and nearly 5 miles long, which had sustained serious damage caused by tracked vehicles and heavy military lorries, was reconstructed throughout its length. The old surface was removed, the rock bottoming blinded with 3" ballast and well consolidated with mechanical rollers, on top of which 4" waterbound macadam and a wearing carpet of 1" thickness of bituminous premixed material was laid.

186. Other sections of road which received attention during the year were the access road to the Government Agricultural Station at Castle Peak, the narrow tortuous road leading to the Police Headquarters and District Office at Taipo, and the police patrol path from Taipo Market to Shun Wan on the North side of Tolo harbour. This latter path was strengthened to provide an all-weather jeep road 10 feet wide and 3 miles in length to assist the police in the patrolling of this isolated part of the New Territories. This necessitated repairs to retaining walls.
