7. During the year there was some improvement in the staff position except in the Crown Lands and Surveys Office, where there was still a serious shortage of Land and Estate Surveyors.
8. A Five Year Programme of Major Works was approved by Government and this permitted forward planning so as to distribute the work as evenly as possible over the five years period, and to utilize the technical staff to the best advantage.
9. During the financial year under review the Public Works Department, which undertakes all Government building and engineering work in the Colony, carried out works to the value of over forty-seven million dollars. These works are described in some detail in the following pages.
