A traffic census taken on some of the main roads in the inside city district during a twelve-hour period (8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.) gave the following results, which are shown compared with the 1937 figures:-

51. Roads and Bridges outside city (Maintenance and Improvements) :-The surfaces of approximately 102 miles of roads were maintained in a satisfactory manner.
Bends at Stubbs Road, Wongneichong Gap Road and Island Road were super-elevated, and the surface improved generally.
The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing:
