84. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc. :-Sewers, storm water drains, and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired, and maintained in good condition, the open channels and nullahs being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. Sand deposits, as they accumulated were removed.

All metal work in connection with the drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred.

85. Gas and Electric Lighting:-The total number of electric street lamps in use at the end of the year was 497, an increase of twenty-six over the previous year. Twenty-eight lamps in Prince Edward Road from Nathan Road to Boundary Street junction were increased in candle power from 100 to 200.

86. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages :-Damage caused by typhoon and rainstorm consisted of landslips in cuttings on Boundary Street, Grampian Road, Lai Chi Kok Road and Taipo Road. The surfaces to Sha Tin Gap Road and Customs Pass Road were re-instated with decomposed granite and the channels cleared. A rubble wall and cement concrete catch-water was constructed in the cutting on Taipo Road near its junction with Castle Peak Road.

Sand and silt were removed from nullahs at Cheung Sha Wan, Nanchang Street and Sam Tak Road; and from catch-pits, storm-water drains, etc., in Grampian Road, New Taipo Road, etc.; extensive repairs were effected to Lai Chi Kok Nullah.

Repairs to piles and walings of Kowloon City Ferry Pier were carried out after the typhoon in September.

87. Maintenance of Water Works, Lai Chi Kok:-The total quantity of water supplied during the year was 98.69 million gallons shewing a decrease of 2.80 million gallons on 1933 and an average consumption of 270,000 gallons per day.

Details of consumption are given in Table IX.

88. Water Meters:-There were twenty-five meters in use at the close of the year compared with twenty-seven in 1933. The number of meters examined and repaired during the year was thirty-six.
