Manhole covers
All metal work in traps, gullies, gratings etc., were replaced, and a number of old disused drains destroyed and filled in. Manhole covers were renewed on the principal bus routes. Connection with the drainage systems was inspected, where found necessary, repaired and tarred.

69. Gas Lighting.-The total number of street lamps in use at the end of the year was 555, an increase of two over the previous year. All lamps are incandescent.

70. Electric Lighting.—The total number of lamps in use at the end of the year was 522, an increase of four over previous year.

71. Extension of Lighting.-Eighteen additional electric and five additional gas lamps were installed.

72. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages. Following typhoons repairs of varying magnitude were carried out to the following buildings:-Kowloon Hospital, Police Training School, Tsim Tsa Tsui Police Station and Tai Kok Tsui Market.

73. Maintenance of Water Works.-A constant supply was maintained on 272 days during the year.
Owing to the protracted dry season and the short wet season it was necessary to impose the following restrictions:- 7th to 10th May, 14 hours daily (6 A.M.—8 P.M.) 11th to 31st May, 7 hours daily (6-10 A.M. and 4-7 P.M.) 1st to 11th June, 7 hours daily (7-8.30 A.M. and 4.30-6 P.M.) 12th to 14th June, 4 hours daily (6.30-8.30 A.M. and 4.30-6.30 P.M.) 7th November to 31st December. 10 hours daily (6-11 A.M. and 4-9 P.M.).
In June a new system of street fountains was completed which enabled a supply of eleven to twelve hours per day to be given in the more congested districts, despite the shorter restrictions.
