50. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in City. (Approximate Mileage 60).—The road surfaces were maintained generally in a satisfactory condition. A considerable amount of damage was caused by the typhoon of August 17th, especially to the roads along the Harbour front. The necessary repairs had not been entirely completed by the end of year. The following are particulars of improved surfacing introduced on a number of the roads.

Substitution of Granite Setts for Macadam :—

Connaught Road, near west end of Wing Lok Street, 364 sq. yds. Morrison Street, 162 sq. yds. Great George Street, 322 sq. yds. Praya East, 185 sq. yds. 1,033 sq. yds.

Substitution of Tar Macadam for Ordinary Macadam :

Des Voeux Road, north side, near General Post Office, 794 sq. yds. Kennedy Road, 1,640 sq. yds. Connaught Road, between Wardley Street and Pedders Street, 3,972 sq. yds. Do. between Wing Wo Street and Man Wa Lane, 3,477 sq. yds. Caine Road, 1,970 sq. yds. Praya East, 363 sq. yds. Wyndham Street, 918 sq. yds. 13,134 sq. yds.

Application of a Thin Coating of Tar Toppings:-

Robinson Road, 939 sq. yds. Caine Road, 339 sq. yds. Morrison Hill Road, 704 sq. yds. Garden Road, 574 sq. yds. 2,556 sq. yds.
