185. A more advanced system of teleprinter communications is in the planning stage with possibilities of development in association with computer facilities to facilitate immediate access to stored information by all major formations.

186. A new 999 Centre was opened in the New Territories on the 4th August, 1968. The 999 centres for Kowloon and Hong Kong Island are also in process of modernization which includes the provision of additional 999 lines to meet expected increase in traffic during the next 5 year period.

187. During the year 36,208 telephone calls were received by District Control Rooms. Of these 26,296 were 999 calls, 645 of which proved to be false. 27,473 teleprinter messages were circulated.

Transport Section

188. This Section is controlled by a Senior Inspector supported by three junior officers. It is responsible for the daily vehicle state, the deployment and maintenance of vehicles throughout the Force and the supervision of the Police Driving School. The Force Vehicle Establish- ment was:

121 Heavy General Purpose vehicles,

8 Prison vans,

3 Command vehicles,

72 Medium General Purpose vehicles, 35 Light vans, 267 Landrovers,

84 Saloon cars,

8 Armoured cars,

5 Mobile canteens,

2 Water carriers,

1 Bus,

7 Towing vehicles,

168 Motor-cycles,

51 Scooters,

4 Halflingers, 1 Trailer.

189. The increase in the establishment over the preceding year results from the expansion of the District Emergency Force structure and requirements to meet normal Force increases.

190. During the year Force vehicles travelled 6,288,757 miles and were involved in 267 accidents. This gave an average of 23,553 miles per accident compared with the previous year's figure of 23,818 miles per accident.
