78. The forerunner of the Unit, the Police Training Contingent, was disbanded in June 1968, when a new integrated training scheme was introduced. The basic training of all ranks in internal security duties, hitherto the responsibility of the Police Training Contingent, is now combined with in-service training at the Police Training School, Aberdeen.

79. On completion of this training at the Police Training School, which covers 13 weeks, officers and men transfer to the Police Tactical Unit. The Police Tactical Unit provides:

(a) An immediate reserve of man-power for use in any emergency; (b) An aid to districts in large scale crowd control duties such as parades, festivals, races, football matches etc. Special operations against crime and dangerous drugs and in natural disasters; (c) Advanced training in internal security duties, including battalion,

company and platoon exercises;

(d) Training in the use of modern weapons, armoured vehicles, field

craft, first aid, life saving, and the riding of motor-cycles;

(e) Outward bound training.

80. During the year ten riot suppression companies, comprising a total of 1,266 officers and men received training at the Police Training Contingent/Police Tactical Unit. A breakdown of those who undertook training is as follows:

8 Gazetted Officers,

71 Inspectors,

160 N.C.O.'s

1,027 Constables.

Four riot suppression companies were based at the Police Tactical Unit on 31st March, 1969.

81. It is anticipated that by 1972 the Police Tactical Unit will have adequate manpower, training facilities, accommodation and equipment to deal efficiently with any emergencies and that by that time the Unit will consist of eight fully trained companies.

82. During the year the Unit was visited by many senior representa- tives of overseas Governments and Police Forces who were given the opportunity of viewing demonstrations of internal security drills and tactics.
