178. The year under review saw members of the Auxiliary Police playing a more important role than ever before in support of their regular colleagues. The Auxiliaries were fully mobilized for the longest period in the history of the Force, and following the end of mobilization an average of 500 men per day undertook additional voluntary part- time duty between July 1967 and March 1968.
POLICE BAND
179. The Police Band commanded by the Director of Music consists of two sections: a conventional military band and a drum and pipe band. In addition to its main function of providing music at ceremonial functions and Police parades, it played on numerous occasions at public concerts, race meetings, foot-ball matches and other public gatherings. During the year the band recorded a long playing record of marches and light music.
180. During the mobilization of the Force members of the Band were deployed on active police duties.
PART VII
WELFARE AND RECREATION
GENERAL
181. The Senior Force Welfare Officer is responsible for advising on the welfare of the Rank and File and their families. He is in charge of the Welfare Section of Police Headquarters which deals with loans and grants, police schools, pensioners, assistance to police widows and orphans, welfare equipment, sports and other entertainments. Where necessary he advises and assists in the settlement of matrimonial dis- putes and gives other types of assistance. He is assisted by a Force Welfare Officer, who is responsible for the administration of the newly opened Welfare Sub-office in Kowloon.

POLICE FORCE WELFARE FUND
This Fund is established under the Police Force Ordinance and is controlled by the Commissioner. It provides loans and, in cases of special distress, grants for serving and retired police officers in need of assistance. The Fund is also used to purchase equipment and services
