assistance. The fund is also used to purchase equipment and services for the general welfare and benefit of Police officers. The fund's sources of revenue are disciplinary fines or forfeits imposed on Police officers, the hire of Police services, and donations or voluntary contributions.

203. Out of a total of 942 applications for loans received and processed during the year, 848 were approved, 33 are still pending, 55 were refused and six withdrawn. Each loan application is treated on its merits and loans are made in respect of such items as maternity expenses, marriages, house removals, funeral expenses, medical expenses, schooling, clothing and furniture purchases, house repairs and Chinese New Year expenses.

204. Dependants of 23 serving members and pensioners of the Rank & File who died during the year were provided with grants to cover funeral expenses. The widows of 12 former members of the Force received a death gratuity of $3,000.00 each, and similar sums were given to the parents of four unmarried officers who died during the year. 20 officers received the $5 per day Hospital Allowance to help defray expenses incurred by families visiting the patient in hospital.

205. The fund at present stands at $676,176 and loans amounting to $274,678 were made during the year.

POLICE SAVINGS SCHEME

206. This scheme enables the rank and file to make regular monthly savings from their salaries. The savings, which may be any multiple of $5, are deducted at source and entrusted to a savings bank which allows a rate of interest of 4% per annum.

207. The total savings on 31st March, 1967 amounted to $1,482,874.80. Deposits for the year 1966-67 amounted to $257,520.00 and withdrawals during the same period were $75,909.35. There were 1,865 members at the end of the year.

POLICE SCHOOLS

208. There are now seven Police Primary Schools providing primary education for 2,321 Police children. The latest is Kennedy Town Police Primary School which was opened in September, 1966.

209. Altogether 24 Police Welfare Scholarships were awarded to children in Police Primary Schools who obtained top marks in the Joint
