206. For the first time in the history of the Auxiliary Police Force, the recruiting of Women Auxiliary Police Constables commenced in October 1965. It is hoped to recruit 150 to perform duty within the Auxiliary Communication Unit. So far 31 recruits have completed their basic training and are now receiving training in communication duties. A second class will commence in the very near future.
207. The Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force continues to grow day by day. The morale and enthusiasm of the members is high and will continue to be so in the knowledge that the Force plays a very impor- tant role in the emergency structure by assisting the Regular Force in the maintenance of law and order and stability within the Colony.
PART VII
WELFARE AND RECREATION
GENERAL
208. The Force Welfare Officer is responsible for advising on the welfare of the Rank and File and their families. He is in charge of the Welfare Section, a part of Police Headquarters, which deals with loans and grants, Police Schools, pensioners, assistance to police widows and orphans, welfare equipment, sports and other entertainments. Where necessary, he advises and assists in the settlement of matrimonial dis- putes and gives other types of assistance.
THE POLICE FORCE WELFARE FUND
209. This fund is established under the Police Force Ordinance and is controlled by the Commissioner to provide loans and, in cases of special distress, grants for serving or retired police officers in need of assistance. The fund is also used to purchase equipment and services for the general welfare and benefit of police officers. The fund's sources of revenue are disciplinary fines or forfeits inflicted on Police Officers, the hire of Police Officers, and donations or voluntary contributions.
210. A total of 715 applications for loans were processed during the year, 649 were approved, 39 were refused and 27 were still pending at the end of the year. Each loan application is treated on its merits. Loans are made in respect of maternity expenses, marriages, house
