interested in the welfare of discharged prisoners, and at the end of the year 17 Police Supervisees were under the care of the Hong Kong Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society.
126. 3,242 investigations were made into the character and back- ground of applicants for the Police Force, an increase of 636 compared with the previous year. With the continuation of the Police recruiting campaign, it was necessary to retain additional staff to assist with the increased work.
127. The Interpol Sub-Bureau participated in 82 investigations of an international nature.
128. The Drug Disposal Unit destroyed 12,547 items compared with 13,564 the previous year. Over 6,000 lb. of Raw Opium, 86 lb. of Morphine, 247 lb. of Morphine Hydrochloride (salt of morphine) and 38 lb. of Heroin, which were confiscated during the period under re- view, were stored under Police custody pending disposal at the end of the year.
AIDS TO INVESTIGATION SECTION
129. The sections described below are at Police Headquarters, Arsenal Street, and come under the direct control of C.I.D. Head- quarters.
Identification Bureau
130. This bureau consists of four sections: the fingerprint records section, the scene of crime section, the photographic section and the questioned documents section.
131. During the year a total of 53,656 fingerprint forms were re- ceived at the bureau for examination, representing a decrease of 3,624 as compared with the previous year. The single fingerprint collection was increased by some 4,800 prints to bring the total collection to 57,300, representing some 5,725 criminals with convictions for burglary and similar offences.
132. The photographic section attended 4,500 scenes of crime and took 65,287 photographs of which 183,115 prints and enlargements were made. 206,749 documents were microfilmed for the police and other Departments.
133. The questioned documents section examined 1,673 manuscripts and 660 type-written documents compared with 1,219 and 87 in the
