This function was well illustrated during the year, on the occasion of the Queen's Birthday Parade when they escorted more than 400 children from the ferry pier to the assigned enclosure in Gascoigne Road. Also during the 3 days when "The Beatles' were visiting Hong Kong, the contingent of Women Police were responsible for maintaining order inside the Hotel and Theatre, in addition to assisting their male colleagues in the streets.

During the year a number of W/Inspec- tors, W/N.C.Os, and senior W.P.Cs, attended a short course of instruction on the duties of this department and visited many specialist Institutions. A new Children's Reception Centre at Chuk Yuen was opened during this year and this has made it easier to provide temporary care for children and infants found wandering or abandoned. Discussions with Officers of the Child Welfare Department were held and as a result the work of Women Police was extended to include the institution of court proceedings in respect of physically and mentally handicapped abandoned children; the responsibility for this task had not previously been defined.
