98. Promotion from the rank of inspector to senior inspector re- quires the candidate to have had at least seven years' service, to have passed the Standard III Professional Examination and to pass the special senior inspectors' promotion examination. Final selection depends on recommendations made to the Commissioner of Police by an Inter- view Board consisting of the Deputy Commissioner as Chairman and the Assistant Commissioners.

99. Officers promoted to the rank of assistant superintendent are normally drawn from chief inspectors and senior inspectors. Promotion depends on successfully passing a Senior Professional Examination and on the recommendation of the Commissioner, advised by an Interview Board.

TECHNICAL COURSES

100. 237 members of the Force completed driving courses during the year, of whom 232 qualified as police drivers.

101. The training of Marine police officers suffered a severe setback when it became necessary to cancel all marine training in order to deploy all available manpower to combat the illegal immigration problem referred to in paragraphs 11-14. Nevertheless 30 Constables obtained their Coxswains Certificates and one passed the wireless tele- graphy course. This specialized training was still in abeyance at the end of the year.

COURSES IN GREAT BRITAIN AND OTHER COUNTRIES

102. Seven senior officers and 19 junior officers attended Courses of instruction in Great Britain during the year. One junior officer attended a specialist course in Japan.

TRAINING FOR NON-POLICE PERSONNEL

103. The Police Training School continues to give assistance to other government departments which employ disciplined staff with con- stabulary type powers. 3 sub-inspectors of the Hawker Control Force completed a six months training course; 2 officers were still under train- ing at the end of the year. 8 District watchmen also completed training and 5 more were still in the School.

THE POLICE TRAINING CONTINGENT INTERNAL SECURITY TRAINING

104. The Police Training Contingent, which is the Force reserve on immediate call in times of emergency, undertakes the intensive training in internal security duties of junior officers, N.C.O.'s and constables.
