of the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force. In the Auxiliary Marine Contingent members are offered a choice of courses of study in subjects. such as navigation, coxswain's duties, diesel and steam engineering, radio and radar. Again instructors are mainly provided from qualified members of the Auxiliary Force.
187. The Auxiliary Emergency Units attended special courses at the Police Training Contingent and received instruction in internal security duties and crowd control. Training took place during weekends.
188. 1,182 Auxiliaries attended a 7-day camp at the Police Training School between July and November 1961 and unit training was continuous throughout the year. A high standard of efficiency and morale has been maintained.
PART VII
WELFARE AND RECREATION
GENERAL
189. The post of Force Welfare Officer is temporarily vacant and efforts are being made to find a suitably qualified person to fill it. The holder of this post is particularly responsible for the welfare of the Rank and File and is in charge of the Welfare Section, which deals with loans and grants, police schools, pensioners, assistance to police widows and orphans, welfare equipment, sports and other entertain- ments, matrimonial disputes, and promoting the general well-being of the Rank and File and their families.
WELFARE COMMITTEE
190. Each Division has its own committee which meets monthly to consider problems affecting the welfare and the messing of the Rank and File members of the formation. The steady development of these committees is constantly encouraged.
POLICE WELFARE FUND
191. The Fund is established under the Police Force Ordinance and enables members of the Force to be assisted financially whenever the need arises. Each application for a loan is considered by the Welfare staff. During the year a total of 714 applications were received and 646 approved. The majority of requests for financial assistance are for maternity or marriage expenses, removal of quarters, funeral and
