ROAD SAFETY MEASURES
161. During the year more traffic aids were installed in order to improve the traffic flow, reduce accidents, and provide a greater measure of safety for pedestrians. Traffic light signals, both vehicle-actuated and pedestrian-operated, were provided at four intersections, and nearly one hundred additional pedestrian crossings were installed in the urban
areas.
162. Two organizations, the Road Safety Association and the Institute of Advanced Motorists, were registered under the Societies Ordinance during the year. The objects of the Road Safety Association
are:
(a) to formulate a Road Safety Programme, designed to improve driving standards and educate drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and other road users; and
(b) to consider design, production and publication of propaganda
related to Road Safety.
163. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (H.K.) Limited has been formed by a group of public spirited citizens who aim to improve the standard of driving in the Colony and thereby reduce the number of accidents. The Institute offers an opportunity to drivers to develop that extra skill and concentration which plays such a vital part in good, accident-free driving.
164. Encouragement and assistance were given to Kai Fong Associations and other public spirited groups during the year to enable them to prepare their own traffic safety campaigns. Exhibitions, which were well planned and well received, were arranged by the Wanchai Kai Fong Association, and the Community Centres of Wong Tai Sin and Tsuen Wan.
165. Road Safety education conducted by the Police continued to be directed towards schools to educate the younger members of the community in the Highway Code, and to encourage good road sense. Lectures, film shows and distribution of pamphlets were used in this campaign. One pamphlet showing the most effective methods of pro- moting road safety for children was prepared as an aid to teachers and parents.
166. Six films were produced and shown in a large number of cinemas throughout the Colony. The films were short features and dealt with crossing the road and the use of zebra crossings, crossing
