District Control Rooms and direct lines are available from them to the Fire Services Headquarters for use when fire appliances and ambulances are needed.

MARINE POLICE

41. The Marine Division comes under the control of a Senior Super- intendent who is responsible to the Assistant Commissioner, New Territories and Marine District, for the policing of the 700 square miles of Colony waters, and the 235 off-shore islands. Marine Police patrols also visit less accessible parts of the Mainland.

THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT

42. Under the direction of an Assistant Commissioner who is assisted by a Senior Superintendent, the C.I.D. is responsible for the prevention, detection and investigation of crime. Part IV of this report contains a detailed description of the C.I.D.

THE SPECIAL BRANCH

43. The Special Branch is responsible for the prevention and detec- tion of subversive activities and for supplying the intelligence necessary for the maintenance of internal security.

44. The Director of the Special Branch is an Assistant Commissioner, with a Senior Superintendent as Deputy Director. The Branch is divided into sections, each controlled by a Superintendent.

THE TRAFFIC BRANCH

45. The Branch is commanded by a Senior Superintendent and for operational purposes is divided into a headquarters and two traffic districts, one covering Hong Kong Island and the other Kowloon and the New Territories. A Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent is in charge of each traffic district. The Branch responsibilities include traffic control, traffic planning, road safety measures, accident investigation, vehicle registration and licensing, driving tests and the issue of driving licences and other permits relating to traffic control,

THE COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT BRANCH

46. The officer in command of this Branch is a Senior Superin- tendent of Police. The Branch is divided into two sections, one being responsible for all Force communications and the other for vehicles and
