169. A number of cases were extremely involved. One, concerning title to lands being resumed by Government for the building of resettle- ment blocks, occupied an inspector for the greater part of the year and investigations still continue. A second inspector was fully engaged for six months investigating fraudulent practices by a member of the staff of a firm of solicitors; fifty two charges of forgery, larceny and false pretences were laid.
General Investigation Section
170. This section was formerly known as the Passport Fraud Investigation Section, formed primarily to investigate passport and immigration irregularities. The section now covers investigation into all matters which do not come under any accepted classification, e.g. offences under the Medical Registration Dentistry, Education, Pharmacy and Poisons and Undesirable Medical Advertisements Ordinances. The establishment of this section has been increased to deal with the numerous offences brought about by increased legislation and to avoid District C.I.D. units being inundated with inquiries which would impede the daily work of preventing and detecting crime. Investigations have revealed large-scale illegal immigration into Canada and close co- operation has been maintained with the Canadian and other immigra- tion authorities.
Police Dog Unit
171. An Inspector of Police is in charge of the unit, assisted by a Sergeant Dog Trainer, four Corporals and thirty P.C. Dog Handlers. At the end of the year, the dog strength was thirty five, including ten Dobermann Pinschers, twenty three Alsatian or German Shepherd type dogs and two opium-locating dogs. A litter of Dobermann Pinschers was bred; four matured successfully and were taken on strength.
