Criminal Record Office
159. The Criminal Records Office keeps all C.I.D. files and main- tains indices in respect of these files; indices include the main nominal index, missing persons, stolen and lost property, etc. The filing room handles approximately 4,000 files per month. Requests for record checks, by other government departments as well as police formations, were made at the rate of about 3,000 per month. Efforts were made during the year to assimilate information gathered by various sections without unnecessarily duplicating the work.
Modus Operandi Office
160. The Modus Operandi Office is responsible for indexing the methods by which certain offences are committed and the peculiarities of the criminals who commit them; from these indices 76 identifications were made during the year. The Visual or Photographic Index of criminals convicted of certain offences was used by witnesses on 192 occasions during the year, 61 identifications being made.
Prevention of Crime Office
161. This office, situated at Police Headquarters, consists of three sections under the supervision of a Chief Detective Inspector.
162. The Police Supervision Section deals with the screening and documentation of all persons placed under police supervision. 666 persons were placed under supervision during the year, bringing the total at the end of the year to 3,768; of these 2,542 were reporting regularly. The work of assisting supervisees to find employment and establish themselves in society was continued in conjunction with the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society.
163. The Deportation Section is responsible for the strict compliance with the legal procedures to be followed in all deportation cases and for the execution of orders made by the Governor in Council. It is also responsible for all procedures required for the detention of persons under the Emergency (Detention Orders) Regulations. Persons deported during the year totalled 230; the number of persons detained under the Emergency Regulations totalled 123, bringing the total in detention at the end of the year to 176.
164. The Police Vetting Section deals with the vetting of persons applying for enlistment in the Police Force; 1,079 investigations were completed during the year.
